China's marathon and road events maintain a rapid growth in recent years. In 2019, a total of 1828 large-scale events were held in mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), an increase of 247 compared with that in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 15.62%. The total number of participants was 7.1256 million, an increase of 1.2956 million compared with 5.83 million in 2018, with a year-on-year increase of 22.22%. Among them, 357 events were certified by Chinese Athletic Association, 18 more than in 2018. The participants of CAA certified events reached 4.2391 million, accounting for 59.49% of the total number of participants, an increase of 577500 compared with 2018, a year-on-year increase of 15.77%.

In 2019, 24 marathon races have been awarded label races by IAAF, including 12 gold label road races, 2 silver labels and 10 bronze labels. In terms of the geographical distribution of the events, 31 provinces, autonomous regions and cities (not including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) have held marathon and road race events. Zhejiang province continued to rank first with 232 races, Jiangsu Province and Beijing ranked second and third, 185 and 117 races respectively. Among the 337 cities in China, 300 cities, that’s 89% of all, have held large-scale races in 2019. Among them, 187 cities have held races certified by CAA, 15 more than in 2018.
